The BBFC is a independant, non-governmental company that classifies films to different age restrictions. The company is base in the UK and the benefits of this is because the company will know what the UK people would acceot as an age rating and because it wioll be more trusted with what restrictions they put for that film. The BBFC has to put a restriction on every film that is publisghed in cinema's and even video games. It does this by watching the film and rating it by the different groups e.g. Nudity/sex, drug/drinking etc. The different age restrications are;
U-Universal
A 'U' film should be suitable to somebody 4 years and over. The content of drugs/drink should not be referenced or shown. There can be violence but only mild and not much of a threat and the problem gets resolved.
PG- Parental Guidence
A 'PG' film must not disturb somebody 8years or older but the parent should feel that there child is going to be comfortable watching it but will most probably accompany them but a child could watch it on there own without getting worked up
12/12A
A '12/12A' should be suitable for anybody 12 years or over. A '12A' can not be seen to anybody 12 years or younger unless accompanied by an adult.
15
A '15' should be suitable to anybody 15years or over. The content can be allowed a lot more but still has to suitable to a viewer who might be 15 years of age.
18
A '18' film should be suitable to anybody 18years or over allowing a lot more criteria of the ratings into the films but with some restrictions that wouldnt disturb anybody.
R18
To be shown only in specially licensed cinemas, or supplied only in licensed sex shops, and to adults of not less than 18 years.
The BBFC company is good for when we do our thriller opening because it means that we can set an age restriction and choose a target audience to base our opening on. This company would be effective to produce, distribute and market our thriller opening because we can use the classifcations and select a target audience which could either open it up to a wider target audience or specifically target one age group.
