Narrative Theories

Tzvetan Torodov
This theory is that the plot starts off in harmony/social order/has stability. It then has a disruption or a change and maybe chaos which changes the mood of the plot and has the audience on 'the edge of their seat'. There is then a restoration of harmony often by a 'hero'. This theory is based upon:
Equilibrium ------> Disequilibrium ------> New Equilibrium

Roland Barthes
Roland Barthes argued that narrative was controlled by codes, these codes are:
Enigma code - a narrative device that engages the audience by presenting a puzzle or problem to be solved
Action code - events that solve the enigma - e.g. gun battle

Binary Opposition
The theory that texts construct meanings through the use of opposites:
good vs. bad
hero vs. villain
rich vs. poor
strong vs. weak
