What is Editing?
Editing can be putting the film together and having the video clips in an order that makes sense to the viewer. It is also joining clips together and adding special effects and sound to the clips.
Continuity Editing
This maintain the spatial relationships in a film and gets the audiences attetion to specific objects/characters/events in the film. It also allows the film to shift through time and gives the film rhythm, shows action and reaction.
Transitions
These are the ways two shots are joined together. The most common transistion is a Straight Cut - where one shot cuts straight to the next, this keeps continuity and pace in the film.
Dissolve
A gradual trasition from one shot to another - one shot fades into another. This helps continuity, shows a move from one object or location to the next, and can indicate time passing.
Fade to Black/White
One shot fades in or out to or from black or white. This can create a sense of time passing or, if done quickly, could indicate flashbacks.
Fade in/out
A shot is faded out to black screen or in from a black screen. The effect shows progression of time and can sometimes indicate chaos. This is usually at the beginning or end of a sequence.
Cross- Cutting
This is an action cut between two sequences to create links, parallels or contrast between two storylines and their settings. This type of editing can create tension.
Wipe
This is where a line moves across the screen showing a transisition from one shot to another. The effect shows a change either in location or in time.
Jump Cut
This is where there is an Abrupt cut between shots. If the effect isnt done right it can look really bad, but if done well it can be dramatic to the sudden change in the film.
Visual Effects
Can range from using black and white to using CGI(computer generated images).
Diegetic Sound
Diegetic sound is heard on and recorded from the location of the film e.g. speech, ambient sound etc.
Non-Diegetic Sound
Non-diegetic sound is added when the film is edited to add to the atmosphere e.g. sound effects, music, etc.
Montage
This allows the audience to make meaning from the sequencing of images. And is also used to show a passing of time and progression of a character of relationship.
180 degree Rule or Crossing the LineOne side of each character so it doesnt change the direction of which the characters are positioned.
Shot Reverse Shot
Edits together two shots from two different camera positions to give the impression of a conversation taking place.
Match on Action
When shots are edited together to show how actions progress through time. This effect shows cause and effect.
